Rug Weaving Today

Over one million Afghan citizens now depend on rug weaving for a living and the vegetable-dye renaissance has increased this number significantly. Every job created and every artisan paid helps turn Afghanistan from dependency toward full independence.

James Opie is proud to have contributed to the “return to vegetable dyes” in both Iran and Afghanistan, a change well rooted now in Afghanistan’s rug weaving culture.

Using hand-spun yarns is important, too, both for subtleties imparted to the finished rugs and for wages paid to hundreds of hand-spinners.

Pieces in The James Opie Collection, made entirely in Afghanistan, equal in quality many of the best pieces from the 19th century, and earlier.
